Most railway systems are electrical systems that involve cabled sensors on the track superstructure or within the trackbed. These systems however provide point measurements for a single variable, so the transducer requirements scale linearly for the size of deployment. This means trackside monitoring studies have generally focused on localised track sections, often for analysis of a particular parameter. Measurements over longer lengths of track to understand the variability of a certain track parameter are less common but have occasionally been implemented, with additional cabling cost.
xDAS, a FIBERVIS solution is utilized to monitor railway track performance in replacement of conventional foil strain gauge and high speed digital image correlation. Different from conventional systems, xDAS is capable of detecting strain across a single cable up to 40km at a spatial resolution of 30cm. Additionally, xDAS allows for monitoring track deflections in the region of micro-strain and at low frequencies (<40hz).
Full structural analysis evaluation of track performance is achieved with xDAS. Straightforward quantification of mechanical behavior including train detection, speed estimation and axle performance evaluation is achievable. As a whole, the system saves deployment cost with capabilities to measure dynamic (time varying) strain along a rail on a length of fiber optic cable and at high sampling resolutions comparable to conventional systems.
